EAST GREENWICH, R.I. --  Filmmakers Chad and Michelle Verdi of Verdi Productions in East Greenwich announced they have joined Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese's documentary project, "The New York Review of Books: A 50 Year Argument."

The film, due to premiere in New York on Sept. 27 and then air on HBO, tells the story of the vibrant intellectual life of the The New York Review of Books, founded during a newspaper strike in 1963.

Mary Larsen, executive coordinator for Verdi Productions, said Wednesday in an email that the Verdis are executive producers on the project and secured financing for the post-production work.

The Verdis are working on their own project with Scorsese, a bio of boxer Vinny Paz called "Bleed for This."  Slated to star Aaron Eckhart and Miles Teller, it's scheduled to begin shooting in Rhode Island in November.

RI Filmmakers Chad & Michelle Verdi Join Oscar Winning Director Martin Scorsese's Passion Project, "The New York Review of Books: A 50 YEAR ARGUMENT" as Executive Producers

Film to premiere in New York on September 27th

EAST GREENWICH, RI - July 8, 2014 (Investorideas.com Newswire) Verdi Productions is pleased to announce that RI filmmakers Chad & Michelle Verdi have joined Oscar winning director Martin Scorsese's passion project "The New York Review of Books: A 50 YEAR ARGUMENT" as Executive Producers. HBO DOCUMENTARY FILMS will present the film in association with SIKELIA productions and Verdi Productions.

The documentary filmed by Martin Scorsese & David Tedeschi tells the story of the papers found over fifty years ago during the New York City newspaper strike of 1963.

America's leading journal of ideas has pursued its goal with rigor, a unique style and more than its share of controversy. The New York Review of Books: A 50 Year Argument, directed by acclaimed filmmaker  Martin Scorsese and his longtime documentary collaborator David Tedeschi, rides the waves of literary, political and cultural history in much the same way as the paper itself.

Provocative, idiosyncratic and incendiary, the film weaves rarely seen archival material, contributor interviews and excerpts from writings by such icons as James Baldwin, Gore Vidal, and Joan Didion with original verité footage filmed in the Review's West Village office.

These scenes reflect the humming, restless energy of a magazine that, heading into its second half-century, still feels as vital as its indefatigable founding editor, Robert Silvers.

Confrontation and intelligent argument are in its DNA, as illustrated in the documentary by the skirmish between Vidal and Norman Mailer over women's liberation, Mary McCarthy's jeremiad against American hegemony in Vietnam, Mark Danner's investigation into the use of enhanced interrogation during the Iraq war, and Michael Greenberg's analysis of the Occupy movement. Joan Didion's reading from her quietly furious explication of the 1989 Central Park Jogger Case, filmed at the recent fiftieth anniversary event at New York's Town Hall, exemplifies the film's approach: honor the writers, the writing, and the paper's determination to reveal the truth in all its complexity.

The film captures the power of ideas in shaping history. "Magazines don't change the world," says contributor Avishai Margalit, "but they shape a certain kind of climate of ideas. Influence is like the knight in chess, one move straight and then diagonal. It doesn't go in straight lines." The film documents this extraordinary process, through the inimitable filmmaking style of Martin Scorsese.

Award winning producer Chad A. Verdi stated, "My wife Michelle and I are very excited about being involved in such a great project and look forward to the premiere in September." Verdi added, "This is one of many projects that we will executive produce with Mr. Scorsese and his producing partner Emma Koskoff, over the next few years. We will announce our involvement in a new project in the very near future."

The history of The New York Review of Books is incisively celebrated and distilled by co-directors Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi in “The 50-Year Argument,” which takes us behind-the-scenes of editor Robert Silvers’ storied weekly and finds, to its great reassurance, an American cultural Goliath little affected by the tectonic shifts that have reduced so much print media to rubble. Enlivened by new and vintage interviews with NYRB contributors who recount the stories behind their stories, this sharply etched, admittedly specialized portrait (first shown as a work-in-progress at this year’s Berlin Film Festival) should find its natural home on HBO, where it premieres October 6.

To tell the story of the NYRB is in many ways to revisit six decades of tumultuous political and cultural affairs — those that the Review was born out of (specifically, the 1963 New York newspaper strike) and those it has reported on with a consistent disregard for whichever way popular opinion was blowing. Not for nothing, the film makes clear, did Silvers and co-editor Barbara Epstein place “of Books” in considerably smaller typeface on the second line of the paper’s masthead. While book reviews have always been the staple content (with an emphasis on championing the little known and shooting down overpraised white elephants), the paper largely made its reputation as a forum for provocative commentary and reporting, from Mary McCarthy on Vietnam to Mark Danner on Iraq.

It’s a daunting amount of ground to cover — easily imaginable as a sprawling, Ken Burns-style docu series — but which Scorsese and Tedeschi (Scorsese’s longtime docu editor) manage to corral into three primary strands: an overview of the NYRB’s origins and early years; a fly-on-the-wall glimpse of the paper’s current, day-to-day operations; and extended chapters devoted to some of the Review’s most celebrated pieces, recounted in their authors’ own words. To that end, the filmmakers have drawn on superb archival footage to make the likes of Susan Sontag and Norman Mailer as present in the film as more recent contributors like Michael Chabon, Zoe Heller and the playwright Colm Toibin, who speaks of the impact the paper had on literary and intellectual circles as far afield as his native Dublin. (In an elegant touch, each speaker is intro’d onscreen by an original, black-and-white Brigitte Lacombe portrait.)

EAST GREENWICH, RI - April 9, 2014 (Investorideas.com Newswire) The Woodhaven Production Company and Screen Media Films are proud to announce a new ten picture deal between the two companies starting with the film 'Almost Mercy'.

Chad Verdi and his wife Michelle, through their production companies, Verdi Productions and The Woodhaven Production Company have had great success over the last four years with producing, filming, and selling six feature films.

They are now embarking on arguably one of the most aggressive production schedules to date; four feature films in twelve months.

Verdi stated, "Michelle and I just finished Executive producing our latest film in New York, titled BAD HURT and are currently in pre-production for Almost Mercy withfilming beginning in Rhode Island on April 28th. After the completion of Almost Mercy, we go right into pre-production on BLEED FOR THIS, with filming to commence September 2014. Next year, 2015, will start with a bang with an untitled project - filming starting in March."

Verdi added, "This all began with Screen Media Films in 2010 when they acquired my first film INKUBUS. SMF has now acquired five of my feature films including Almost Mercy. It’s a very special relationship that I value greatly. SMF has a great team led by President Suzanne Blech. We have achieved much success while working together for the past four years. Having a ten picture distribution deal is a filmmaker's dream."

Blech states, "We are excited to work even closer with Chad and his team in creating product that can have success in today’s marketplace. It is a great opportunity for both of us."

The ten picture deal is exclusive of Verdi's passion project BLEED FOR THIS. The movie tells the true-life story of 5-time world champion Rhode Island boxer Vinny Pazienza, as he recovers from a near fatal car accident that left him with a broken neck. He then goes on to win three additional world boxing titles, one of the most incredible and dramatic comebacks in sports history.

Golden Globe nominated actor Aaron Eckhart (THE DARK KNIGHT, OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN, I, FRANKENSTEIN) will take on the role of Paz's boxing trainer, Kevin Rooney. Rooney was the trainer to Mike Tyson when Tyson won his first heavyweight championship. Rooney had a major role in changing Vinny's boxing style that led him to become one of only two boxers ever to win titles in both the lightweight and junior middle weight class in 1991. The other boxer was Roberto Duran whom Vinny fought twice (with Vinny victorious in both fights).

Miles Teller (THE FANTASTIC FOUR, 21 & OVER, PROJECT X, THAT AWKWARD MOMENT, THE SPECTACULAR NOW), currently starring in DIVERGENT, in theaters now, will take on the role of Vinny Paz.

The powerhouse team is led by writer/director Ben Younger (BOILER ROOM, PRIME), Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese (THE DEPARTED, GOODFELLAS), Oscar-winning producer Bruce Cohen (AMERICAN BEAUTY, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK), Emma Tillinger Koskoff (THE DEPARTED, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET), Noah Kraft (LOOSIES), award-winning RI producer Chad A. Verdi (LOOSIES, A BET'S A BET, BAD HURT) and Michelle Verdi (LOOSIES, A BET'S A BET, BAD HURT).

FROM THE PROVIDENCE JOURNAL: Hollywood actors cast to bring Vinny Paz’s life to the big screen

Established Hollywood actors Aaron Eckhart and Miles Teller will play the lead roles in “Bleed For This,” a movie about boxer Vinny Paz being produced by East Greenwich-based Verdi Productions.

President and CEO Chad A. Verdi said in an interview Monday that the film will be shot in Rhode Island this summer, telling the story of Paz’s comeback after an auto accident in 1991 that left him with a broken neck.

Teller, 26, will play Paz. He is currently starring in “That Awkward Moment”; his other films include “The Spectacular Now” and “21 & Over.”

Eckhart, 45, will play Paz’s trainer, Kevin Rooney. Eckhart is currently starring in “I, Frankenstein.” Other recent films include “The Dark Knight” and “Olympus Has Fallen.”

Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese is executive producer for the project.

Verdi said the film should be in the theaters by late 2015 or early 2016. He said it will have a budget of between $10 million and $20 million.

Verdi said he fought to have the movie made in Paz’s native Rhode Island, with the help of Steven Feinberg, executive director of the Rhode Island Film & Television Office.

“The film just had to be made here,” Verdi said. “No other place would satisfy me.”

He added that shooting here is good for the state’s economy. “Every time we turn the cameras on, we hire at least 100 people,” he said.

Verdi said the production would apply for state tax credits.

Verdi, 46, said he is primarily a businessman, not a movie maker, but entered the film industry in 2009 in order to make a movie about Paz, an old friend. Other projects by Verdi Productions and Verdi’s other company, Woodhaven Production Co., were intended to allow Verdi to learn the film business so “Bleed For This” could be made.

“It’s the greatest comeback in the history of sports,” Verdi said, pointing out that after his accident, doctors told Paz he would never fight again, and might not even walk normally.

Verdi said he was introduced to Scorsese by U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I. Verdi said Scorsese and he hit it off, and Scorsese loved the script by screenwriter and director Ben Younger.

“The cast came in because of the quality of the script, and the opportunity to work with Marty [Scorsese],” Verdi said.

Verdi said Teller is “an up-and-coming DiCaprio,” but playing Paz will be demanding. Because Paz fought as both a lightweight and middleweight, Teller will first need to lose 15 pounds, and then gain 35 pounds for the role.

Paz, now 51, is an associate producer on the film, and Verdi said the boxer will work with Teller on gestures, mannerisms and his fighting style.

After a near fatal car crash left Vinny not knowing if he'd ever walk again, never mind box, he went on to make one of the most incredible comebacks in sports history. To secure success and to meet our timetable, we will be using four different directors and over 100 actors on these four different directors.

Verdi stated, "my producing partner Noah Kraft and I got involved in the film business in 2009 with one purpose: to have the story of Vinny Paz told. Over the past four years, I have produced 5 feature films with another two slated for this year. Recently, Ben Younger came on board to write and direct. Bleed For This is Ben's vision and he now has the support of Martin Scorsese and Emma Tillinger Koskoff, who are producing. I was introduced to Martin and Emma through Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, who has been instrumental in helping me develop these projects."

EAST GREENWICH, RI - May 16, 2013 (Investorideas.com Newswire) Verdi Productions and The Woodhaven Production Company announce that RI filmmaker Chad A. Verdi has added Oscar nominee Eric Roberts to the cast of A Bet's A Bet. Roberts will join Jonathan Silverman and three time Emmy winner Jennifer Finnigan, both will act in and co-direct the feature film. More star studded cast members will be announced soon with filming to commence in Rhode Island in early June.

Investorideas.com Newswire Investorideas.com Newswire

A Bet's A Bet, written by Mark Mussina and Steven Sessions, tells the story of Vince, New England's most successful divorce attorney. To Vince, life is one big competition, and losing is unacceptable. This also applies in his dating life with his love 'em and leave 'em approach. Then Vince meets Jane, who is beautiful, successful and also extremely driven. Together they enter into a series of entertaining wagers with each other where the winner gets to decide the fate of the loser. After all, "A Bet's a Bet!"

As previously announced, Producers Chad A.Verdi and Gino Pereira will produce four films in the state of RI and employ hundreds of people over the next 18 months: "This film will mark the second film of four on one of the most aggressive production schedules ever attempted by a production company. It's not often that a film has co-directors, but after numerous face to face meetings and months of discussions, Mr. Pereira and I both felt this was best for the project. Jonathan and Jennifer bring years of experience in film and so much passion to this project. Jonathan has acted in two of my prior films, while coming on board as an executive producer in my latest film, Self Storage. He also just directed National Lampoon's most resent comedy, Another Dirty Movie that is due out this August. Jennifer is currently starring in David E Kelley's new TNT drama, Monday Mornings. Both Silverman and Finnigan are dear friends and have supporting roles in the film and it's going to be great working with them."

"We are in a great position because we are making films knowing that they're already sold and have distribution," Verdi stated. "Of the four films, two will be horror, one a comedy and the final will be my passion project Bleed For This: the inspirational true story of World Champion Boxer Vinny Paz. After a near fatal car crash left Vinny not knowing if he'd ever walk again, never mind box, he went on to make one of the most incredible comebacks in sports history. To secure success and to meet our timetable, we will be using four different directors and over 100 actors on these four films."

Bleed For This is Ben's vision and he now has the support of Martin Scorsese and Emma Tillinger Koskoff, who are producing. I was introduced to Martin and Emma through Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, who has been instrumental in helping me develop these projects.

I am very happy and excited to have Ben, Marty and Emma involved. The film will be shot in the state of RI with principal photography beginning in 2014."

Army of the Damned has wrapped with Verdi stating "this is my best film to date." Verdi added "writer/director Tom DeNucci and DP Sam Eilertsen did one hell of a job with this film. We are all very proud of them and all the people who worked on this film."

Army of the Damned tells the story of a hit reality TV crew following a group of local cops in a sleepy town. Things go horribly wrong for the cops, played by Tony Todd ("The Candyman", "Platoon", "The Rock"), Sully Erna ("Godsmack" lead singer and front man), Tommy Dreamer (Pro wrestling legend), David Chokachi ("Baywatch", "Witchblade", "Beyond the Break"), Thea Trinidad (TNA wrestling diva, "Self Storage", "Five Senses of Fear"), Maria Kanellis (WWE wresting diva) and Tom Paolino ("Inkubus", "Loosies", "Infected"), and the camera crew, played by Joey Fatone ("NSYNC", "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", "Inkubus") and Jackie Moore ("100 Ghost Street, The Returnof Richard Speck", "Homeland", "30 Rock") when they respond to a call that brings a whole new meaning to the term "domestic disturbance." Faced with life and death situations, these officers are forced to throw the rule book out in order to stay alive. With the help of a reclusive hermit played by Michael Berryman ("One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest", "The Devil's Rejects", "Lords of Salem") and a petty criminal played by Nick Principe ("Laid to Rest"," Laid to Rest 2", "Madison County"), the lawmen do all they can to serve, protect and avoid joining the ARMY of the DAMNED.

Verdi and Pereira have added, Mark Mussina, Michael Mussina, Pete Goldfinger, David Gere, Seth Rosenblit, Adam Alexander, Larry Allison Jr., Daniel Klingerman and Tom DeNucci as executive producers with Michelle Verdi as the music supervisor.
